SQL Introduction

SQL (Structured Query Language) is used to communicate with a database.

According to ANSI (American National Standards Institute), it is the standard language for RDMS (Relational Database Management Systems).

SQL statements are used to perform tasks such as update data on a database, or retrieve data from a database. SQL can insert records, update records, and delete records and also create new database objects such as databases and tables. And drop (delete) them.

Using SQL

  • Execute queries on a database
  • Retrieve data from a database
  • Update records in a database
  • Create new databases
  • Create backup of databases
  • Create stored procedures in database
  • Create new tables in a database
  • Set permissions for tables
  • Create stored procedures and set permissions for stored procedures
  • Create views and set permissions for views

If you need to build a website with a database and contents , generally need knowledge of the following:

  • A server side scripting language (i.e. ColdFusion, PHP, ASP/.NET)
  • A database query language (eg, SQL)
  • A client side markup language and style sheets (eg, HTML/CSS)

The next lesson covers the SQL syntax basics.
